Highlights from the Leaders Retreat, April 13-15, 2018

The Augustine Collective held its first Leaders Retreat on April 13-15, 2018. Twenty-eight students representing the core leadership from 15 journals convened in the greater Boston area to share ideas, grow intellectually, and build community together.

Here’s what several students had to say:

“It was greatly encouraging to put a face to the journals at other schools around the nation. For their leaders to be congregated in one place, exchanging ideas and becoming friends, has given me a glimpse of the larger the collective and potential influence of this project – it has been very exciting. I now feel like I am part of a larger movement for God’s glory. This retreat has also introduced me to ideas and works of Christian thought.”

“I ended the retreat with a full-page length list of ideas that I know are feasible because they have been done at other schools. This is to say that I learned many practical best practices that I believe will help to sharpen our publication. In addition to these practical pointers, it also was a refreshing weekend of personal growth in the midst of Christians who want to engage culture with a spirit of excellence. I didn’t know that people like y’all existed. To see people who want to think rigorously about both theology and the issues of the world affirmed to me that this is possible. During my lifetime, I’ve straddled two worlds. Back home, I’ve been a part of communities that think rigorously about theology but do not engage with the secular world. At school, I have met remarkably few people who think rigorously about theology while maintaining the belief that the Bible is the Word of God. The community at Augustine Collective felt surprisingly like home in ways that neither [my university community] nor [my hometown community] feel. The knowledge of the Augustine Collective community convinced my heart that our journal is part of something bigger than just my campus.”

“[I learned that] there are tangible ways of engaging with the Christian intellectual tradition as well as fostering community which we have not tried before.”

“I was encouraged to see the excitement and zeal of other journal leaders. My understanding of leadership for my own journal was sharpened and challenged.”

“[My biggest take-away was] making friendships with other students and engaging in meaningful conversation. The environment was so much more intimate and small than the January conference. I loved this because I had the opportunity to cultivate relationships with students from other schools and more holistically learn from them. Also, learning practical ways of creating community and leading our journals, [and] seeing how we are all united in Christ and His love for the people on each of our individual campuses.”
